Rail connections via Portsmouth Harbour station

Portsmouth Harbour station, located at The Hard in the heart of Portsea, is the principal rail gateway to the district. The station is the terminus of two routes from London: the South Western Railway service from London Waterloo via Woking, Guildford and Haslemere, with a journey time of approximately 1 hour 40 minutes; and the Southern service via Brighton, Chichester and Havant, which also connects to stations along the south coast.

The station was opened in 1876 and is built on a platform extending over the harbour, placing arriving passengers within yards of the Gosport Ferry, the bus interchange, the dockyard entrance and the approaches to Gunwharf Quays. This remarkable intermodal convenience makes it one of the best-connected stations in the country for onward travel.

Portsmouth and Southsea station, roughly ten minutes' walk to the east of Portsea, provides an alternative for some services and may be more convenient for destinations on the eastern side of the district. This station is served by both South Western Railway and Southern services.

Train frequency to London is good, with several services per hour during peak times on both routes. Off-peak and weekend services are less frequent but still regular. The service is popular with both commuters and leisure travellers, and the station can be busy during peak hours and the summer tourist season.

Advance tickets purchased online typically offer the best fares, though walk-up tickets are available at the station. Contactless payment and Oyster cards are accepted on South Western Railway services within the London zones but not beyond.
