Restaurants in Portsea
Where to eat in the dockyard quarter
Portsea and its immediate surroundings offer a varied selection of restaurants catering to a wide range of tastes and budgets. The greatest concentration is found at Gunwharf Quays, where the waterfront setting adds to the appeal of the dining experience. Chains and independent restaurants here serve everything from Italian and American cuisine to Japanese, Thai, Mexican and Mediterranean dishes, many with views across Portsmouth Harbour to Gosport and the naval base. The outdoor terraces along the waterfront are particularly popular during the warmer months.
Away from Gunwharf Quays, the Queen Street area and Edinburgh Road corridor contain a mixture of independent restaurants, takeaways and cafes serving the local residential and student communities. The range includes Turkish, Indian, Chinese and traditional British options, with prices generally more modest than the waterfront venues. Several of these places have loyal local followings and offer good value.
The Historic Dockyard itself contains cafes and a restaurant at Boathouse 4, which provides a distinctive dining environment within the converted Victorian boathouse. Old Portsmouth, a short walk to the south, adds further options including gastropubs with harbour views. The Still and West and the Bridge Tavern both serve food alongside their drink offerings.
The restaurant scene in Portsea has developed considerably since the opening of Gunwharf Quays in 2001, and the presence of the university has encouraged a wider range of affordable eating options. Whether looking for a special waterfront dinner or a quick, good-value meal, the area is well served.
