Parking in Portsea
Where to park when visiting the area
Parking in Portsea requires some advance planning, particularly during busy periods. The most significant car park is the multi-storey at Gunwharf Quays, which provides over 2,000 spaces and is the primary parking facility for both the shopping complex and the wider Portsea area. The first hour is free, with hourly charges thereafter. Validated parking is available for Gunwharf Quays shoppers and diners, offering reduced rates. The car park can fill up during peak periods, especially on summer weekends, bank holidays and during major events.
The Historic Dockyard has its own visitor car park, accessed from the main road approaches to the dockyard. This is a convenient option for those whose primary destination is the dockyard and its attractions. Charges apply, and the car park has limited capacity.
On-street parking within Portsea itself is largely restricted to residents' permit zones, reflecting the dense urban character of the district. There are some pay-and-display bays in the surrounding area, but availability is limited. The streets around the university campus are particularly heavily parked during term time.
For those willing to walk a short distance, car parks in the wider city centre, along Commercial Road and around the civic area, may offer alternative options. However, for most visitors to the dockyard and Gunwharf Quays, the dedicated car parks at those venues are the most practical choice.
Given the excellent public transport connections at The Hard, including the railway station, bus interchange and ferry, many visitors find it easier and cheaper to arrive by public transport rather than driving.
