Spinnaker Tower
Portsmouth's iconic observation tower
The Spinnaker Tower is a 170-metre observation tower at Gunwharf Quays that has become the most recognisable landmark in the Portsmouth skyline. Designed by architect Scott Wilson and inspired by the form of a sail, the tower was conceived as a Millennium project but did not open until October 2005 after a prolonged construction process affected by engineering challenges and funding difficulties.
The tower rises from the northern end of the Gunwharf Quays development, its distinctive white form visible for miles in every direction and serving as a navigational reference point for vessels in the Solent. At 170 metres, it is taller than the London Eye (135 metres) and Blackpool Tower (158 metres), making it one of the tallest structures in the United Kingdom outside London.
Three viewing decks at different heights offer panoramic views in every direction. Looking west, visitors see across Portsmouth Harbour to Gosport, with the naval base and its warships in the foreground. To the south, the view extends across the Solent to the Isle of Wight, and on clear days the Needles at the island's western tip are visible. The northern view takes in the South Downs rising behind the city. The historic ships in the dockyard are visible directly below.
The highest deck includes a glass floor section, allowing visitors to look straight down. This is not for the faint-hearted but provides a memorable experience. A cafe on the lower deck serves refreshments with harbour views.
The tower hosts occasional special events, including charity abseils, SkyWalk experiences on an external viewing platform, and seasonal events. It is one of the most visited paid attractions in Hampshire and a defining symbol of modern Portsea.
