Events in Portsea

Annual events, festivals and special occasions

Portsea hosts a programme of events throughout the year, drawing on its heritage attractions, waterfront setting and the cultural life of the university and wider city. The events range from large-scale public occasions to specialist heritage and cultural gatherings.

The Historic Dockyard provides the setting for several major events. Trafalgar Day, commemorated on 21 October, is marked with ceremonies and special events around HMS Victory. The dockyard hosts themed weekends, re-enactment events and family activity days at various points during the year, often timed to school holiday periods. Firework displays and outdoor events make use of the atmospheric waterfront setting.

Gunwharf Quays contributes to the events calendar with seasonal markets, live entertainment, fashion events and promotions tied to key retail periods. The Christmas market and summer events are particularly popular. The Spinnaker Tower hosts occasional special events including charity abseils and illumination schemes for national awareness campaigns.

The university's presence generates a range of academic, cultural and sporting events, including lectures, exhibitions, degree shows, concerts and sporting fixtures. Some of these are open to the wider public.

Portsmouth's wider events calendar, including the Great South Run, the Victorious Festival and various maritime events, has an impact on Portsea as a principal visitor area and transport hub. Large events can bring significant crowds to the area, particularly around The Hard and the transport interchange.

Community events, organised by local groups and the city council, add to the programme and help maintain the social fabric of the Portsea neighbourhood.
