Harbour Tours from Portsea

Boat trips around Portsmouth Harbour and the Solent

Portsmouth Harbour and the Solent offer outstanding opportunities for boat tours and trips, with several operators running services from the Portsea waterfront. These tours provide a unique perspective on the harbour, the naval base, the historic ships and the wider Solent.

Harbour tours typically depart from The Hard or the Gunwharf Quays waterfront and cruise around Portsmouth Harbour, passing the naval base with its warships, submarines and support vessels. The commentary provided by guides covers the history of the dockyard, the identification of current naval vessels and the wider story of the harbour. The chance to see operational warships at close range from the water is a highlight that cannot be replicated from the shore.

Longer tours extend into the Solent, passing the harbour entrance with its historic fortifications, the Round Tower and the Point. Some tours continue past Southsea Castle, along the seafront and across to the Isle of Wight. Others visit the Solent forts, the Victorian sea forts that stand in the middle of the Solent and are visible from the shore.

Specialist tours are also available, including D-Day themed trips, sunset cruises and seasonal specials. Fishing trips and sailing experiences can be arranged from marinas in the wider harbour area.

The Gosport Ferry, while primarily a transport service, also provides an affordable and enjoyable harbour crossing with good views of the naval base, the dockyard and the harbour activity. The four-minute crossing is a miniature harbour tour in its own right.

Tour availability varies by season, with the widest choice of trips offered during the spring and summer months. Booking in advance is recommended during peak periods.
