Shopping at Gunwharf Quays

The complete guide to the outlet complex

Gunwharf Quays is the dominant retail destination in the Portsea area and one of the most visited shopping complexes on the south coast. Built on the site of the former HMS Vernon naval shore establishment and opened in 2001, the complex contains over 90 outlet stores arranged around pedestrianised courtyards and a harbour promenade.

The retail offering spans a wide range of categories. Fashion is the strongest sector, with dozens of outlets covering menswear, womenswear and childrenswear from designer, premium and high street brands. Sportswear, footwear and accessories are also well represented. Homeware, beauty, electronics and food stores complete the selection.

The outlet format means that prices are typically 30 to 70 per cent below full retail, though discounts vary by brand and item. The stores stock a mixture of previous seasons' lines, samples, overruns and merchandise produced specifically for the outlet channel. Sales periods and promotional events offer additional reductions.

Beyond retail, Gunwharf Quays offers a comprehensive leisure and dining selection. Over 30 restaurants, bars and cafes provide food and drink options throughout the day and evening. A Vue cinema, bowling alley and other leisure facilities add to the appeal. The Spinnaker Tower, rising from the northern end of the complex, is a major attraction in its own right.

Practical information: the complex is open daily, generally 10am to 8pm on weekdays with shorter Sunday hours. Portsmouth Harbour station is immediately adjacent, and a large multi-storey car park provides over 2,000 spaces. The first hour of parking is free. Gunwharf Quays is particularly busy during school holidays, sale events and summer weekends.
