University of Portsmouth
Higher education in the heart of Portsea
The University of Portsmouth is one of the most significant institutions in the Portsea area, with a large campus presence that has reshaped the district over the past three decades. The university gained full university status in 1992, having previously been Portsmouth Polytechnic and before that the Portsmouth College of Technology. Its origins can be traced back to 1869.
The university has approximately 25,000 students and is one of the largest employers in the city. Its campus extends across the Portsea area and into the adjacent city centre, with major buildings along Edinburgh Road, in the Lion Terrace area and around Guildhall Square. The university library, various faculty buildings, lecture theatres and student services are distributed across this compact urban campus.
Academic strengths include engineering, creative industries, business, cosmology, pharmacy and sport science. The university performs well in national league tables and has received Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework. Its research activity spans a wide range of disciplines.
The impact of the university on Portsea has been transformative. Student accommodation, both purpose-built blocks and houses in multiple occupation, now accounts for a significant proportion of the housing stock in the eastern part of the district. Cafes, shops and services catering to students have become established along Edinburgh Road and surrounding streets. The student population has brought vitality, economic activity and a younger demographic to an area that had been in decline.
The university continues to invest in its campus, with new buildings and refurbishments ongoing. Its presence is now integral to the identity and economy of Portsea.
