Hospital Services Near Portsea
Acute care and emergency services
The principal hospital serving the Portsea area is Queen Alexandra Hospital (QA), located in Cosham approximately four miles to the north of Portsea. QA is the main acute hospital for the Portsmouth area and is operated by Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust. It provides a comprehensive range of services including a 24-hour accident and emergency department, surgical and medical wards, intensive care, maternity services, paediatrics and a wide range of outpatient clinics.
The hospital can be reached from Portsea by bus, with services running along the main road corridors to Cosham. By car, the journey takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes depending on traffic. In an emergency, the ambulance service provides rapid response and transport.
St Mary's Community Health Campus, situated closer to the city centre, provides some outpatient services, rehabilitation and community health facilities. It does not have an accident and emergency department.
For urgent but non-life-threatening conditions, NHS urgent care services are available at various locations in the Portsmouth area. These provide treatment for injuries and illnesses that require same-day attention but do not warrant an emergency department visit. The NHS 111 service can advise on the most appropriate service for a given condition.
The University of Portsmouth provides its own student health services, supplementing the NHS provision for the large student population in the Portsea area.
Overall, hospital and urgent care services for Portsea residents and visitors are provided through the standard NHS framework, with QA Hospital serving as the acute hub for the entire Portsmouth area.
