Dockyard Tours and Experiences
Guided visits and behind-the-scenes access
The Portsmouth Historic Dockyard offers a range of tours and experiences that go beyond the standard self-guided visit. These provide deeper access to the site's history and buildings, often including areas not routinely open to the public.
Guided tours of HMS Victory are a central part of the visitor experience, with knowledgeable guides taking small groups through the ship and explaining the daily life of the crew, the events of the Battle of Trafalgar and the death of Nelson. The guides bring the ship to life with stories and details that enhance the experience beyond what is possible from information panels alone.
The wider dockyard site also offers guided walks that explore the historic buildings, including the Georgian storehouses, the ropery and the perimeter of the working naval base. These tours provide context on the industrial and architectural history of the dockyard, covering topics such as the development of dry dock technology, the production processes that supplied the fleet, and the daily life of the dockyard workforce.
Special events and themed tours are offered throughout the year, often timed to coincide with anniversaries of significant naval events such as Trafalgar Day in October. Evening events, talks by historians and curators, and behind-the-scenes access to conservation workshops are occasionally available. The Action Stations attraction provides interactive experiences including simulated helicopter flights and ship handling.
For school groups, the dockyard offers educational programmes tailored to the national curriculum, covering topics from Tudor history to Victorian engineering and the two world wars. These programmes make the dockyard one of the most important educational resources in the region.
