St George's Road

Street guide, Portsea

St George's Road is one of the principal internal streets of Portsea, running through the centre of the district and connecting several of its distinct areas. The street takes its name from St George's Church, the parish church of Portsea, which was built in 1753 to serve the rapidly growing dockyard community. The church, a Grade II* listed building, was damaged during the Second World War but has been restored and remains an active place of worship. St George's Road passes through a neighbourhood that was once densely packed with terraced housing for dockyard families. Wartime bombing and post-war clearance removed most of this housing, and the street is now lined with a mixture of social housing, university buildings and some commercial premises. The road provides a useful route between the Lion Terrace area and the Unicorn Gate area, and connects to Queen Street and other streets in the Portsea network.
