Museum Road
Street guide, Portsea
Museum Road runs south from Edinburgh Road and is one of the best-preserved Victorian residential streets in the Portsea area. The street takes its name from the former Portsmouth Museum, which was located nearby. The terraced houses along Museum Road are largely intact and display the characteristic features of late nineteenth-century domestic architecture: bay windows, decorative brickwork, slate roofs and modest front areas bounded by low walls. The street has a cohesive and attractive appearance that makes it stand out in a district where so much of the earlier fabric was lost to wartime bombing. Many of the houses have been converted to student accommodation, given the proximity to the University of Portsmouth, but the external appearance of the street remains largely unaltered. Museum Road connects Edinburgh Road to the residential areas further south and runs parallel to Anglesea Road and King's Road.
