Havant Street
Street guide, Portsea
Havant Street lies close to Queen Street in central Portsea and takes its name from the town of Havant, roughly ten miles to the north-east. The naming of streets after nearby towns was common practice in expanding urban areas during the Georgian and Victorian periods. Havant Street was part of the dense residential network that housed Portsea's dockyard workforce. The street was heavily damaged during the Second World War and rebuilt in the post-war period. Today it is a quiet residential street containing social housing from various periods. It connects to Queen Street and the surrounding street grid, serving as one of the many small roads that make up the residential fabric of central Portsea. The University of Portsmouth's campus expansion has brought new buildings and a student presence to the vicinity.
