Flathouse Road
Street guide, Portsea
Flathouse Road takes its name from the Flat House, a naval building that once stood in this northern part of Portsea. The street runs through a residential area close to the dockyard perimeter wall and has been through several cycles of development. The original Victorian terraces that housed dockyard workers were destroyed in the Blitz, replaced by post-war council housing, and in some cases redeveloped again more recently. Flathouse Road is a quieter, more residential street than those in the commercial centre of Portsea to the south. The area has a strong community identity, with families that have lived in the neighbourhood for generations. The street provides access to Paradise Street and Curzon Howe Road, and the dockyard wall runs close by, a constant reminder of the naval establishment that shaped this community.
