Bishop Street

Street guide, Portsea

Bishop Street is a residential street in central Portsea, situated close to Queen Street. It is one of a number of short streets that run off the main thoroughfare and formed part of the tight grid of terraced housing that characterised Victorian Portsea. The name may derive from the bishops of Winchester, who held the manor of Portsea in the medieval period. Like much of the district, Bishop Street was devastated during the 1941 Blitz and rebuilt with post-war housing. The street today is a quiet residential road, serving as a connection between Queen Street and the surrounding neighbourhood. It typifies the many smaller Portsea streets that lost their original character to wartime destruction but retain names that speak to the district's long history.
