Ship Anson

Food & Drink, Portsea

The Ship Anson is a traditional pub on The Hard, named after Admiral George Anson, the celebrated eighteenth-century naval commander who circumnavigated the globe and served as First Lord of the Admiralty. The pub has a long history of serving the dockyard and naval community and retains a traditional public house character. It serves real ales and standard pub food. The Ship Anson is popular with locals and visitors alike and provides a less polished, more authentic pub experience than some of the newer bars and restaurants at Gunwharf Quays nearby. The naming of the pub after a famous admiral is typical of the naval associations that pervade every aspect of Portsea's culture.
