The Historic Dockyard Quarter

Gunwharf Quays

A major waterfront outlet shopping and leisure complex on the site of the former HMS Vernon.

Gunwharf Quays is a large waterfront retail and leisure development built on the site of the former HMS Vernon naval shore establishment. The site had served military purposes for centuries before its closure in 1996, originally functioning as an ordnance storage and distribution point for the Royal Navy. The modern development opened in 2001 and quickly established itself as one of the south coast's premier shopping and entertainment destinations. The complex contains over 90 outlet stores offering designer and high street brands at discounted prices, alongside a wide selection of restaurants, bars and cafes arranged around an attractive harbour-side setting. The Spinnaker Tower, a 170-metre observation tower that has become the defining landmark of the Portsmouth skyline, rises from the northern end of the development. A Vue cinema, bowling alley and various other leisure facilities add to the offering. The waterfront promenade provides fine views across Portsmouth Harbour to Gosport and the wider Solent. Gunwharf Quays sits immediately south of The Hard and Portsmouth Harbour station, making it easily accessible by rail and ferry. The development has been a significant driver of regeneration in the wider Portsea area, attracting millions of visitors annually and supporting substantial employment in retail and hospitality.
