Edinburgh Road Area
A broad arterial route on Portsea's northern edge, lined with university buildings and close to Victoria Park.
Edinburgh Road runs along the northern edge of Portsea, forming a broad arterial route that connects the district to the rest of Portsmouth. The road marks the approximate line of the former Portsea fortifications and serves as a boundary between the historic dockyard quarter and the commercial and civic areas to the north and east. The University of Portsmouth has a major presence along Edinburgh Road, with several of its principal buildings fronting the street, including the university library and various faculty buildings. Victoria Park, a well-maintained public green space, lies on the northern side of Edinburgh Road and provides a welcome area of open ground in this densely built-up part of the city. The park contains the Portsmouth War Memorial and is a popular spot for lunchtime breaks and informal recreation. The street itself carries significant traffic and is served by several bus routes. Commercial premises, including cafes, restaurants and shops catering largely to the student population, line sections of the road. The area also contains some of the better-preserved Victorian architecture in Portsea, with terraces on the streets running south from Edinburgh Road retaining much of their original character. Museum Road, running south from Edinburgh Road, is particularly notable for its intact Victorian terraces. The Edinburgh Road area represents Portsea's interface with the wider city.
